The Eyes of Eshnunna:
An Adventure in Mesopotamia

A graphic novel featuring Compass Rose Voyager
Story Synopsis
Part I To the Marshes
Rose Compass (alias Compass Rose Voyager), junior curator in a very large, metropolitan art museum, returns home from a recent adventure to find the museum board of trustees camped out in her living room. In a backwards twist of fate prompted by their shenanigans and those of her nemesis Dark Side, Rose travels to post-invasion Iraq to investigate a mysterious cache of stolen Sumerian votive figures, believed to contain clues to an unimaginable treasure. The trail leads from the looted Iraq Museum to the ancient marshes of the M’adan, in Southern Iraq. The voyage ends at Eshnunna, an ancient ruined city east of Baghdad, where she discovers a female cult shrine of a power beyond modern understanding. Along the way she encounters old friends, flames and enemies, as well new friends and places of wonder — while learning just how to be a soldier.

Part II The Eternal Flame
In a mudhif hidden in the marshes of southern Iraq, Compass Rose meets with her nemesis Dark Side, who has nefariously acquired the artifacts necessary to unlock the secrets of the great temple hymn. Rose undergoes a transformation through the mists of time, finds Eden with a special friend, and is again on the trail to Eshnunna — but unconscious, on the back of a donkey! Escaping from imprisonement in a minaret, Rose uses her knowledge to discover at last the hallowed place she was searching for. All's well that ends well, but for the troubled lands where history began, yet another era of conflict is just beginning.

MORE ABOUT THE BOOK
The Eyes of Eshnunna: An Adventure in Mesopotamia is the first of a proposed series of graphic novels transporting readers into a worldview of art, history, culture and adventure. Its theme is the understanding and preservation of art; its power and its wonder. Through the eyes and adventures of the plucky and optimistic heroine Compass Rose, the author hopes to dispel gloom and inspire cultural literacy. She was conceived as a feminine antidote to darkness and ignorance; a means to encourage the love of life and art! Compass Rose is an art scholar and connoisseur; a Tintin-esque character with retro style. She is not a super-hero! But she is curious and brave, feisty and feminine; her weapons are embedded in her charm bracelet, lip gloss and perfume. The content of the series is most suited to high-school students and above, but younger readers who are attracted to art and history will find much to enjoy. In this adventure Compass Rose travels to post-invasion Iraq to retrieve a mysterious cache of stolen Sumerian votive figures. Throughout the story readers will find images of actual places, artifacts and architecture from the country of Iraq, where this story takes place. A glossary and hand-drawn map of ancient Iraq appear at the end of the book. The story's subtext, of understanding and preserving what remains of our shared cultural heritage, continues to be timely. In the light of the recent destruction of antiquities in the Middle East, it retains a sense of urgency. Compass Rose Voyager will be traveling to every continent of the globe. Her next adventure, Sanshu No Jingi (The Imperial Regalia), takes place in Japan. Look for it! Compass Rose Voyager will be traveling to every continent of the globe.
